Description

Lienshyttan's blast furnace in Riddarhyttan has ancient origins. At the beginning of the 17th century, Tomas Hammarsmed was granted the right to build a smithy and a hammer forge. There was also a flour and sawmill here.

In the 1840s, the iron ores in Riddarhyttan became very attractive and a new blast furnace was built in the narrow gorge below the dam on Lake Lien. In 1894, a major rebuild was carried out and the blast furnace was given an impressive chimney, which was a full 26 m high. Lienshyttan was in operation until 1959 and was fired with charcoal until it was blown down.

After the restoration, the plant can be visited and you can get up on the blast furnace crane. The large slag heap, which is one of the few preserved in Bergslagen, is also impressive. If you climb to the top of the slag heap, you also have a magnificent view of the area.

There was an ingenious system of cable cars and railways to the blast furnace. In 1877, Riddarhytte AB began construction of the narrow-gauge Uttersberg-Riddarhyttans Järnväg (URJ), which was an extension of the Köping-Uttersbergs Järnväg (KUJ). The preserved Lokstallet 1093 with its water tower is located close to the ironworks.

During the years 2020 and 2021, careful restoration has been done on some of the iron details and facade of the cabin. New floors have been laid on the two floors between the bottom level and the top crown.
