Description
Valaklitt is a hilly beech forest located between Valasjön and Stegasjön. The area is dramatic, with large beech forest-clad mountain and cliff faces with a lot of dead wood. Due to sensitive bird life, it is forbidden to stay in a small part of the reserve during the period February 1 to July 31. Valaklitt is part of Åkulla beech forests and from the southern parking lot in the nearby reserve Nabben you can walk to the reserve on a forest road.
The Åkulla area, together with Biskopstorp in Halmstad and Hallandsåsen in Laholm, is one of our county's most valuable deciduous forest areas. These areas also have great recreational values, not least Åkulla where a continuous trail system offers several miles of varied hikes.
Valuable forest
Valaklitt is dominated by beech forests that grow on nutrient-poor soil, known as heath beech forests. The ground is covered with a brown layer of old beech leaves. There are few plants to be seen among the leaves, but the fungi are more numerous in the fall. Here you can find somewhat rarer chanterelle varieties such as curly chanterelle (should not be picked as it is rare) and black trumpet mushroom. Beautiful mushrooms such as yellow-footed mushroom, coral tag mushroom and candelabra mushroom can be seen from old rotting logs. These are all signal species that show that this is a valuable forest. There has been a rich supply of old trees and dead wood here for a very long time. The mushroom finds also signal that there are several other unusual and red-listed species in the forest.
Birds and bugs
In winter, large flocks of mountain finches can be seen feeding on beechnuts in the forest. Wood pigeons are also found in the area. Valaklitt has bird species that are sensitive to disturbance, which is why access to part of the reserve is prohibited between 1 February and 31 July. The dead wood contains a large number of red-listed beetle species. The red eye beetle needs very old beech forest with plenty of moist dead wood where the larvae can develop.

Regulations
To protect the nature reserve, the County Administrative Board has decided on special regulations, including those that you as a visitor to the area must follow and respect.
In addition to what applies under other legislation, it is forbidden to:
- damage living or dead standing or lying trees and bushes,
- damage, pick or collect grasses, herbs, mosses, fungi or lichens. However, picking berries, edible mushrooms and individual specimens of vascular plants is permitted,
- catch or collect insects, shells or other invertebrates without the permission of the County Administrative Board
- planting plant or animal species alien to the area,
- organize camps or competitions without the permission of the County Administrative Board,
- digging or otherwise destroying or damaging fixed natural objects or surface formations,
- stay in a caravan or motorhome for more than one night,
- making fires, although the use of camping kitchens is permitted
- put up a picture, poster, sign or make an inscription
- drive a motorized vehicle other than on the road or park other than in a designated place, the prohibition does not apply to hunting rights holders when transporting fallen game or when managing forest stands with special agreements with the landowner until the year specified in the agreement, and
- bring an unleashed dog with the exception of hunting with a dog or for searching.
