Description
In Söderköping there were a large number of churches during the Middle Ages. In the city itself were the parish churches of St. Laurentii and St. Egidius (St. Ilian). Outside the city limits were Drothem's and Skönberga's churches. At that time, Drothem's church was just outside the urban area. Skönberga church, which has parts from the 12th century, was then as now 2 km south of the city. Of the four parish churches, St. Laurentii, Skönberga and Drothems are preserved. Only St. Egidius has been demolished or otherwise destroyed. According to information, it must have been at the current canal port, where i.a. tombstones were found when Göta Kanal was built in the early 1820s. The three other churches remain, and each one delights its visitors with its distinctive medieval beauty.
Since 1235, the Franciscan convent has been located almost wall-to-wall with Drothem's church. A church belonged to the convention. It was demolished in the 1520s to give Gustaf Vasa building materials for Stegeborg's fortress. The foundations of its choir were found during excavations in the 1920s a couple of hundred meters east of Drothem church choir a few meters along Trångsundsgränd, a cross street to Hospitalsgatan.
