Description

Few places are as associated with the emigration era as Åkerby crossroads, where people from all over Småland gathered before continuing to the coast (Karlshamn) and the boats heading to America. On the memorial stone, one can read: "Here at Åkerby crossroads, many began their journey to the land in the west. For the dream of freedom and prosperity, they left their homeland. But Ljuder remains in their hearts." Wilhelm Moberg brought their stories to life in his epic about the emigrants. Åkerby was originally named Grisebo but changed its name in the late 1800s.

In 1884, a murder was committed in the village not far from today’s visitor destination at the crossroads. Some soldiers had bought goat beer (a type of strong beer), celebrated, and ended up in a brawl along the district road. Soldier Edvard Carlsson was shot to death, and the constable was summoned and managed to arrest the perpetrator, a stone worker from Tvings parish, who was sentenced to life imprisonment. The widow and her children received 1,500 kronor in compensation.

Today, Åkerby is a quiet place with good rest opportunities. There is a water tap for hikers and several tables and benches where you can sit down for a snack or eat packed food. The general store across the road has long been closed, and a melancholic atmosphere lingers at the crossroads. One can only imagine the anxiety the emigrants must have felt as their journey continued, leaving behind their homeland and everything they knew to never return again.
