Description

Slättagärde is a wooded hill where oak trees dominate. The trees are between 100 and 200 years old. Many unusual species, especially lichens, mosses and fungi, have found their home here.
Old broadleaf forest is a species-rich environment and many unusual species have found their home here in the old oak forest. Slättagärde borders one of the Åkulla beech forests, one of Sweden's foremost beech forest areas.

Mosses and lichens on the trunks

Many tree trunks, both dead and alive, are covered with various mosses. One example is the felling moss, which is shiny green with light-colored branch tips. Lichens also grow on the trunks, and one of the more spectacular is the lungwort. It has large lobes that are beautifully bright green in damp weather. Large bud lichen is a crustose lichen that grows tightly pressed against the substrate. It is dark green with small orange fruiting bodies that are best seen with a magnifying glass.

Dead wood is important

Many of the rare species in the forest depend on dead wood. The decaying wood attracts beetles and other insects, which in turn become food for birds such as woodpeckers. In this way, dead wood becomes life-giving!
