Actions

Description

Biskopshagen is dominated by fine rocky areas. The area is hilly with rugged mountains and valleys. The reserve has a rich flora with species such as field gentian and maidenhair fern. There are no marked trails, but the area is relatively easy to walk.

The reserve is the northern of two promontories on the Värö Peninsula that jut out into the sea. The area is part of the so-called northern Halland rift valley landscape.

Rich and varied flora

The bedrock in the reserve consists of flat-lying gneiss, made up of feldspar, quartz, mica and magnetite. Due to the varied terrain, the flora is very rich and varied. Forkbeard and honeysuckle grow in the rock crevices. Other typical species for the reserve include wood anemone, wood anemone, daisy, wood anemone, carnation, bride's bread, field thyme, thyme, tar flower, yellow moon and maidenhair fern. If you're lucky, you might even find the Virgin Mary's keys, a beautiful orchid.

Animals and birds

Woodland and field hares are found in the area and birdlife is very rich. Some birds that can be mentioned are stone curlew, meadow pipit, hobby, skylark, saw-whet sparrow, warbler, warbler, yellowhammer and cuckoo. The beach is home to the greater sandpiper, oystercatcher, eider and little auk, among others.

History of the area

The area may have been treeless since the Bronze Age. At that time, it was common to clear and burn the land to create pasture for livestock. We know for certain that there has been open heathland at this location since the mid-17th century. It was Skällåkra village's common outfield where the animals were allowed to graze. Around the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries, parts of the outfield were ploughed up to be used for agriculture. Today, these lands are mainly used for grazing.
