Description

At Sölvesborgviken, you can experience both a rich bird life and a species-rich flora in the grazed coastal meadows and dry meadows. There are also cultural-historical values, such as the remains of an old fortification on Kaninholmen. It is easy to get here over the Sölvesborg Bridge and the area is important for outdoor life.

Sölvesborgsviken is an old nature reserve, originally established as a nature monument in 1939 to protect bird life. In December 2017, the reserve was reorganized with new boundaries and regulations. The nature reserve consists mainly of a brackish bay with surrounding beaches. The inner part of the bay is shallow and rich in reeds. Within the reed belt there are grazed coastal meadows, dry meadows and forest groves. There are also some small islands.

Species-rich flora and fauna

The bay is of great value mainly for resting and wintering seabirds. The waters around Sölvesborg have been judged to be of international importance as a wintering site for lapwings and curlews. As a nesting site, Sölvesborg Bay is important for several wetland-dependent and reed-dwelling bird species, such as the brown harrier and bearded tit. In addition to birds, the area is home to several rare species of butterflies and amphibians, as well as vascular plants such as lesser celandine and meadow lilies. In the inner part of the bay, the red-listed cranesbill has been found. This species is only found in the Baltic Sea.

Nature close to urban areas

Due to its proximity to the city of Sölvesborg and the residential area of Ljungaviken, the nature reserve is of great importance for recreation and outdoor life. The area's accessibility has also increased since the Sölvesborg Bridge was opened in 2012.
