Description

The bog in the border area between Blekinge and Skåne is an inaccessible but exciting area for those interested in bog plants. You may also come across capercaillie and moose here, and wander among the remains of ancient settlements and farmland. Remember to show consideration for the residents of the area when visiting the nature reserve.

Alberta's marsh is a gently sloping, silted marsh, which is an unusual type of marsh in Blekinge. It is essentially hydrologically intact and only affected by drainage and peat extraction to a very small extent. Alberta's bog slopes north and continues into Skåne, where it is known as Böke bog. Parts of Böke Myr are also a nature reserve. Albertas myr is named after Albert Persson, who owned and farmed the property for much of the 20th century.

Bog plants and other species

Large parts of Alberta's bog are affected by seepage of groundwater, which in places results in a great diversity of species. Here you can find vascular plants such as cold grass, coral root, missne, spiderwort, needle star, prickly star and marsh star, as well as mosses such as water crocus and rose hip, and the fungus mosswort. The bull thrives on the bog, as do moose and wild boar.

Around the bog there are pine and spruce forests and beech-dominated deciduous forests. At the current farm in the west and around an older croft in the east are open and tree-bearing grasslands, where you can meet heathy vascular plants, mosses and lichens. There are also traces of the former agricultural landscape in the form of house foundations, cairns, stone walls and remaining crofts.

Overgrowth of the open mire

Until the first half of the 20th century, Alberta's bog was completely open, but has since largely grown back with pine. This is something that has happened to most bogs in southern Sweden during the 20th century, partly due to drainage and other interventions that have changed water flows and dewatered the bogs, as well as due to increased deposition of fertilizers such as nitrogen. The almost complete disappearance of moorland grazing in the 20th century has also contributed to overgrowth. In order not to lose the natural values of the open mire, overgrowth needs to be stopped and pine and other overgrown vegetation removed.
