Description
The area along Korphyttebäcken from Bjursjön and southwards has a long history of iron and copper production. The name Korphyttan may perhaps come from Bene Henrice Korp, who was bishop of Västerås in 1383-94. The historical sources are not easy to interpret, but it is certain that the ruins and the slag heap that remain on the site today have very old origins. Iron was produced here in the blast furnace, traces of which can still be seen on the site. The last time the smelter was used was in the 17th century and after this the area has been inhabited in crofts with surrounding arable land.
Today, the site has been prepared as a visitor center for those who want to experience the tranquility of the forest in harmony with the wings of history. At Korphyttan, visitors are greeted by informative signs that tell about the site's metal production and the traces it has left behind in nature. Follow the nature trail to Lake Bjursjön, where archaeologists have found traces of copper production, and enjoy the view over the water. The same path that led you to Bjursjön takes you back to Korphyttan and the starting point.
