Hinnakullsbergs naturreservat, Naturreservat

Hinnakullsberg consists of a forested mountain with fine views and is bounded by marshes and Vimplabäcken in the north and spruce and larch plantations in the south. At the moment there is no road into the reserve.

The reserve consists of older oak forest with a small element of older beech that dominates the plateau. The forest has a history of meadow mowing according to maps from the 18th century. The trunks are relatively thin and heavily moss-covered with pockets of trap moss and flat feather moss. The nutrient-poor conditions are also reflected in a field layer of bilberry, lingonberry and heather. Dead wood occurs in several varieties, standing, lying and in the branches of living trees. Hollows, hollows and glades are other valuable structures and environments. On the slopes, beech gradually takes over, with some oak mixed in.

Many interesting species

The beech cover is heavy in large parts of the broadleaf forest, as is the spruce in places. South of the mountain there has been a recent thinning of beech, but in the northern slope the trees have been left more untouched, which is evident in the species-rich stems. On both beech and oak, a rich occurrence of lichens, mosses and wood-living beetles is noted, with findings of almost 60 species of conservation interest.

Adjacent to the broadleaf forest are 2 newly cleared clearings and a young spruce forest that will eventually constitute valuable development land for the broadleaf forest. The idea is that there will be new oak and beech trees that can support the species when the older forest eventually dies off. A now forested bog of birch, spruce and pine runs along the Vimpla stream that surrounds the northern part of the reserve. The stream is fast flowing, meandering and botanically interesting.

At the moment it is not possible to get into the reserve by car. You can only get here if you walk through the forest from the north.
