Description
Älmö is a beech forest area that is easy to wander around. Many interesting and unusual species have been found here.
The reserve is mainly beech forest, but there are also other trees such as oak, birch, pine and aspen. There is also planted spruce forest. Small streams run in several places and there are small wetland areas in low-lying areas. Although there are no paths, it is easy to walk in the beech forests.
A habitat for red-listed forest species
The area's natural values were recognized during the key biotope inventory in 1994. There are many red-listed and regionally interesting cryptogams (plants that lack stamens and pistils, such as mosses). Flat feather moss and lung lichen are abundant. Finds have also been made of the red-listed species small noble lichen and pink lichen.
Long-standing wooded area
The area has been more or less forested since the 1600s, mainly with deciduous forest. It is only on a map from 1920 that you can see that conifers have entered the reserve. Older beech trees grow abundantly with lung lichen, and in the northern part of the area there are about ten large oaks and some large aspens.
Wetlands and ancient remains
Small wetland areas and streams contribute to increased humidity and a variation in the landscape. In these wet areas there are some old spruces together with birch and pine. In the northern part of the reserve there is also an ancient monument in the form of a round stone, about five meters in diameter. It has a slightly overmossed filling of stones.
