Description
Simsjön is a bird lake located between Hölo and Järna. The lake was lowered in 1925 to provide more arable land for farming. The lowering created a strong overgrowth of what was left of the lake. After intensive work between 2000 and 2003, the lake has now been restored to the lake it once was.
There is a bird tower on the western side of the lake. Here you can look out over the water mirror, meadows and islands and enjoy the bird life. Ducks are common, as are geese. But you can also see brown harriers nesting in the reeds, white-tailed eagles sailing across the lake, or ospreys riding in search of food. Lark falcons are not rare, and the islands in the lake are often popular nesting sites for laughing gulls.
From the parking lot, follow a red-marked path for about 550 meters to get to the bird tower. You can also look for birds out on the island Ängsholmen, east of Simsjön. You can get there by following a blue-marked path for 950 meters. You can enjoy a snack at both places, but if it's a bit windy, the bird tower is probably best where you sit a little protected.
To get up the bird tower you need to climb a ladder. Both Ängsholmen and the meadows around the bird tower are grazed by cows and sheep. To get into the pastures, you pass stair-like fence crossings.
