Description

The Stoll Tunnel is the path into the underground world, into the heart of Storberget. Take a guided tour through the long mine tunnel, into the mine chambers deep underground, where light streams down from the open-pit mines and the mine spirit watches over the silence. Warm clothing is recommended inside the mine.

The mine at Storberget is perhaps one of the most fascinating of the Iron Kingdom’s many attractions. Storberget is teeming with mines and shafts. The deepest, the Penning Mine, is over 200 meters deep. The Stoll Passage is a 265-meter-long mine tunnel leading straight into Storberget. It was opened in the late 1700s to facilitate the transport of ore and to drain water from the mountain. Inside the mine, 45 meters below the surface, it is dark and quiet. Here, you’ll find ice and piles of snow well into the summer.

The hiking area around “Stollen”—as the mine tunnel is popularly known—is accessible even outside of tour hours. You can explore the mountain on your own and look down into the deep open-pit mines. You can reach the view from the top via a staircase with 220 steps. There’s also a well-marked nature trail to Tjärnäs Hytta, a walk of about two kilometers. At Stollgången, you’ll also find a small museum, a rest area, and a barbecue hut.

During the summer, guided tours are available, and no advance booking is required. You’ll need warm clothing, and sturdy shoes are recommended. There are also specially adapted tours for children.

You can sign up on-site at the mine during scheduled times, but to ensure a spot, please register by email: focus@hofors.se or call 0290-771401.
