Description

Högmossen is a very small nature reserve, but there are still many exciting things to discover. The nature reserve contains old coniferous forest, rocky pine forest and a wooded marsh. The area is located 9 kilometers southwest of Österfärnebo and covers 6 hectares. In the old coniferous forest there are many old trees as well as standing and lying dead trees and high stumps that provide important habitats for many species.

Traces of fire

The forest in Högmossen Nature Reserve bears many traces of forest fires. This is most easily seen on the black charred stumps scattered throughout the forest, but also in the form of so-called fire sounds on living old pines. Fire is a natural part of the forest ecosystem, which means that there are many species that depend on recurrent forest fires.

The reserve also has many species that are typical of old coniferous forests, such as the woolly tick and the wood bumblebee, both of which need good access to lying dead trees.

Valuable swamp forest

In the northern part of the area there is a wooded marsh with a mixture of birches, pines, spruces, alders and coarse old junipers and occasional ash trees. The bog has an exciting flora, including orchids and scorpion moss, which prefers calcareous bogs.
