Description
At the end of the 1800s, Skruv was bustling with activity, and the demand for Swedish glass was very high. In 1896, Skrufs Glassworks was completed, a location thoughtfully chosen by its founder, Robert Celander. He wanted to take advantage of the railway that had been finished just two years earlier, envisioning a simple logistics system where heavy sand could be transported by train to the glassworks. Additionally, the finished glass products could be shipped in the same way, easily connecting the glassworks with buyers in the city. The abundant forests nearby were strategically important, as immense amounts of wood were needed to heat the energy-consuming glass furnaces.
On Saturday, April 10, 1897, the glassworks was inaugurated, with a sermon held by the priest before the festivities truly began.
After a turbulent period when many of Småland's glassworks were forced to close, operations at Skrufs Glassworks are now thriving, with the owner family from Skruv still actively involved in production. All items sold in the shop are made in the workshop, where visitors can see how the glass takes shape. There is also a glass museum, a small shop, and a lovely industrial environment.
