Description
Hvalstaskogen Nature Reserve, located by Lake Valdemaren, consists of old spruce forest growing on a steep and blocky slope. The area is particularly known for its unusual mosses and lichens, including the rare violet-grey thorn lichen that thrives on old spruce trees. The reserve lacks landscaped paths, making it a challenge to walk in the rocky terrain, but visitors can enjoy a rich biodiversity, especially during the summer months.
The forest is dominated by spruces with some old aspen and pine trees, as well as occasional wych elm, willow, rowan, juniper, hazel and alder. Bilberry is a common ground plant, while the protected orchid knotweed is more rare. Dead wood is important for biodiversity, and Hvalsta Forest is home to discerning species such as the long-limbed moss, the wood staircase moss, the thread tick and the woolly tick.
