Description

In a birch grove southeast of Kristianstad city center, Sweden's lowest point is 2.32 meters below sea level. The exhibition tells how the water was drained and shows how high the water would have reached if Hammarslundsvallen had not existed.

When the Danish king Kristian IV built Kristianstad in 1614, the site was the bottom of part of Lake Hammarsjön. It was not until the 1860s that Nosabyviken was drained. The population grew and more land was needed for farming. The English engineer Milner found a solution. He built a dike across Nosaby Bay. The water was then pumped away and the lake bed became arable land.

To drain the water from the bay into Lake Hammar, steam engines were used to drive so-called Archimedes screws. One such six-meter-long screw remains at the embankment near the Ekenabben visitor site.

This was actually part of a larger project to drain large parts of both Hammarsjön and Araslövssjön. Due to financial problems, the work was canceled and the lakes remain today as a valuable part of Vattenriket.
