Description

Most of Klintaskogen is covered by a coarse, high-stemmed beech forest. A species-rich ash forest grows along the shore of Östra Ringsjön. The reserve is also crossed by a steep cliff consisting of red and white sandstone formed around 400 million years ago.

Rich broadleaf forest

Most of the Klintaskogen nature reserve is covered by tall, coarse-stemmed beech forest. In the spring, the wood anemones bloom in carpets, to be replaced later by yellow plover and woodland bengal. On the partly calcareous soils, more unusual herbs such as wild garlic and white crowfoot also grow. Along the shore, an ash forest grows on the old lake bottom, with a very species-rich shrub layer. There are also areas of relatively young oak forest.

From hay meadow to forest

The area now known as Klintaskogen was a hay meadow during the first part of the 19th century. Eventually, the land was transferred from Klinta village to the church and forestry began. In 1883, a lake lowering was carried out in Ringsjön, when the surface was lowered by 1.5 meters. The clear notch you see today parallel to the lake shore is the old shoreline.

Old quarry

Around the turn of the century, red and white sandstone was quarried in the southern part of the reserve. The stone was shipped on barges to Fogdarp. From here it could then be transported further by rail. The cape in the southern part of the reserve is probably the remains of a pier.

Traces from a tropical sea

The sandstone and other rocks in the area were formed around 400 million years ago. They are very fossil-rich in places. At this time, called the Silurian on the geological time scale, Sweden was at the equator. The animals we can see the remains of today as fossils lived in a shallow tropical sea.

Outdoor life

Parking and bus stop are 800 meters from the reserve along road 23 in the northwest. A path runs through the reserve up along the old shoreline. If you want to get down to the lake, it is easiest in the northern part. If you follow the path leading down to the lake, you will pass the remains of an old flax sauna. Remember to take your rubbish home.
