Lagnebrunnaeken - Östergötlands största ek

Östergötland's largest oak grows in a beautiful rolling pasture outside Boxholm, a detour of about 500 meters from the trail.

The Lagnebrunnaek's circumference is about 915 centimeters, so embracing the tree is certainly not easy. No, it takes several fists to reach around!

At 900 years old, the mighty oak has survived many kings and rulers, plagues, the Dacke feud and world wars. It was already a small plant in the early Middle Ages! It's a breathtaking thought when you stand next to the old tree.

The Lagnebrunnaeken is protected as a natural monument. It is a pleasant nest for owls and other birds and insects. No one knows how old it will be, but a not too bold guess is that it is on the downhill slope of life. It is so wrinkled with age that the whole hand disappears into the deep furrows of the bark. But there is certainly tough wood in the old oak so it will probably hang on for many years yet.

From a distance it doesn't look that remarkable, but walk out and stand next to it and you'll notice its size!
