Alvastra pålbyggnad

There is a pilgrimage site here from long before the word pilgrim was coined. About 5000 years ago a wooden platform was built in the bog. It was divided into rooms with fireplaces and had walls of standing logs. The site was flooded for part of the year, so it could not have been used as a settlement. It is likely that people met during the summer for religious gatherings. Quite a lot of deliberately burnt food is found in the bog around the pile building.

Bronze Age victims have been found in the bog near the pile building.
