Description

A real wilderness adventure awaits in the Jätteberget nature reserve. There is a whole system of caves, which can be reached via a ladder. Around the mountain is an untouched magical forest with rare plants and animals.

The pheasant forest

The reserve consists of a mosaic of old-growth forests and moors and is located in a part of Kilsbergen that is extremely rich in large boulders. The area has long been known as Fasaskogen, but the reserve is anything but horrific. The forest can be described as a magical fairytale forest, with large trees that in many cases are completely draped in various hanging lichens.

Boulders and rock caves

A hike along the south side of the Giant Mountain leads past vertical rock faces, through narrow crevices and under arches formed by large blocks leaning against each other. The cave system itself is accessed from the plateau, where a ladder leads down a 14-meter-long passage. The caves have been formed by cracks and displacements in the rock. The passages are a total of 80 meters and the system of caves is thus the county's largest. According to an old legend, the giant Diger lives in the caves.

Species of the old-growth forest

The difficult and boulder-rich terrain has helped the area to escape forestry. The reserve is therefore home to several rare species that are disadvantaged by modern forestry. On the underside of coarse spruce logs, for example, grows the fungus blackticka, which is a real primeval forest species. Birds include the rare three-toed woodpecker, which is associated with forests with a high proportion of old and insect-infested conifers. The nightjar, pearl owl and capercaillie are other birds that nest in the reserve.

Rosling and cold grass

The bogs are nutrient-poor with a sparse vegetation of white mosses, rosling, cold grass and various species of sedges. Out on the Lomtjärnsmossen bog grows the pink-flowering and somewhat sprawling bellwort. It is a species with a western distribution that occurs here at an eastern outpost site. On the edges of the bog, you can find the orchids Virgin Mary's keys and coral root.

Accessibility

There is a marked path in the northern part of the reserve, which also takes you around Sågsjön. From the parking lot, a marked path leads south towards Jätteberget, where there is also a picnic and barbecue area.

Is there firewood?

Firewood is available at the fireplace. Remember to burn in moderation, so that there is enough firewood for future guests. The firewood is replenished regularly, but we cannot guarantee availability at all times. If you want to be sure to be able to make a fire - bring your own firewood. It is not allowed to burn sticks and branches from the forest in the reserve.
