Description
The eel fishing house at lake Kvesen
The building is intended for eel fishing for the so-called "Åboans", i.e. the property owners in Yxnanäs. It was probably built before the year 1550 and has been cared for by the "Turbo residents". Eel fishing has been and is still being carried out during the spring and autumn when the eel must go to the Sargasso Sea to spawn. Disputes over the rights to eel fishing have occurred over the years. In 1747, the Konga Härads District Court established that the eel fishery of old will henceforth belong to Yxnanäs Åboar. In 1986, the National Antiquities Authority determined that the building was of cultural and historical value and granted a grant to replace bad timber in the walls. In 2005, a grant was received from the Södra Skogsägarna, which was used to replace the chipboard roof and replace the interior. Inside the building there is a so-called eel chest where wandering eels are caught. The water comes from lake Kvesen and flows further into the Nättrabyån water system.
