Våtmarksområde, Ljungnäs

**The wetlands in Kalmar consist of recreated aquatic environments in nature with the aim of helping wildlife and at the same time cleaning the water.

In collaboration with landowners and the municipality, Sportfiskarna has in 2022 created a coastal wetland that creates spawning grounds and habitats for pike. Downstream of the wetland in the ditch, a floodplain was created as a complement to the wetland to vary the environment in the ditch and create shallow water environments in several places.

The special feature of the wetland is that it is at sea level, but the inflowing ditches provide freshwater during the wet period. Previous test fishing in these ditches has shown that there is a local pike population and when vegetation is established, the wetland can become a good spawning and nursery place for the pike, which can strengthen the crisis population in Kalmarsund.

Like the Törnerum wetland, the Ljungnäs wetland is proving successful in supporting pike reproduction, helping to strengthen the pike population in Kalmarsund. This helps to counteract eutrophication in the coast as more of the food, through the food chain, becomes predatory fish. Already in the first year, pike migrated to Ljungnäs and were able to reproduce.

Consideration for bird life and fishing bans

Please show consideration by keeping your distance from the wetland and moving calmly in the area during the period March 15 - July 15 when the birds are extra sensitive due to nesting. Please note that fishing is prohibited in all wetlands, ponds and in Törnebybäcken. Fishing is prohibited in order not to disturb the purification capacity of the wetland and to protect the fish that spawn at the outlet of the dam.
