Description

Sylten

The wetlands at Sylten are home to both fish and birds. A teeming environment with much to discover, just a stone's throw from Mönsterås center. Don't forget to bring binoculars on your visit!

As of 2021, 197 bird species have been recorded at Sylten!

**A valuable environment

The wetlands at Sylten have been restored. The area is now once again a mosaic of open water, reed beds and grazed wet meadows. Perch and pike spawn in the shallow water in spring. The wetland also provides nesting sites and food for a wide range of birds.

**Discover the rich bird life

Wading birds are, as the name suggests, birds that wade through the water. Here they find small animals that they pinch with their long beaks. One of the first waders to arrive in the wetland from more southern latitudes is the lapwing. Already in February you can hear the chirping call of the lapwing. Later on, the red-legged kittiwake's energetic, hammering call "kly-kly-kly" can also be heard from the meadows.

A splash in the distance reveals the osprey. If the fishing luck has been good, it takes off with a fish between its claws. The brown marsh harrier is an elegant bird of prey that glides silently over the reeds in search of small animals.

The parrot of the north - that's how you could call the colorful goldfinch. In the fall, you can see it at the tops of thistles and other flowering plants, where it feasts on seeds.
