Skrikebo, Naturreservat

Description

In this nature reserve you can experience a real old-growth forest. Here, the sound of the saw and axe has long since fallen silent. When the trees die of their own accord, they remain standing or lying for a long time. The decaying wood is appreciated by a wide range of fungi, beetles and birds.

Forest left to fend for itself

Most of the trees in the nature reserve are around a hundred years old, but some are older than that. Some pine trees are up to 240 years old. The old conifers are joined by deciduous trees such as aspen and oak. The mix of different tree species allows for a great diversity of plants and animals.

Teeming diversity

In Skrikebo, you walk on thick, shiny green moss mats and over fallen trunks. There are no marked trails, so you have to make your own way through the forest. Keep an eye out for capercaillie, bittern and titmouse on your way over logs and stones. Several unusual mosses, lichens and fungi are also to be discovered for those interested in the more inconspicuous inhabitants of the forest.

Mushrooms home to bugs

If you've ever picked mushrooms, you may have come across bugs while cleaning your harvest. The bugs eat the mushrooms or use them as a home. One example is the red-necked black beetle, which lives in lint fungi. The lint tick is a light-colored, hoof-shaped tick that you are likely to encounter on your visit. If the tick has circular holes, about 3 mm in size, they may be traces of the red-necked black beetle or its relative the common fungus beetle. You may even see one of the 4-7 millimeter beetles sitting on the outside of the tick!
