Psykiatriska museet

**The museum is one of the few remaining preserved environments from the closed world that mental health care at Gertrudsvik outside Västervik once was. It contains a lot of information about what it was like to live that special life, as in a separate town in the city.

Västervik Hospital was opened in 1912, when there was a great need for beds for the mentally ill. The hospital changed its name to Sankta Gertruds sjukhus in 1931, and to Norra sjukhuset in 1967. The hospital functioned as a separate community. At its peak, the hospital had around 1400 patients and 900 staff. The Psychiatric Museum is located on the former hospital site, now Gertrudsvik Sjöstad in Västervik. There is a bus from the center to the museum. The museum is open during the summer and on Thursday afternoons, other times must be booked in advance.
