Description

Malghult Nature Reserve protects old mixed deciduous forest with many broadleaf trees. The forest is a haven for a wide range of unusual species. The area is particularly valuable for birds, butterflies and lichens.

Valuable natural environment

Forests that have long been unaffected by humans, such as this one in Malghult, are called natural forests. In a natural forest, there are plenty of dead hollow trees and fallen trunks. This is what a large part of Sweden's forests looked like a few hundred years ago. Today, only scraps remain and the species that depend on the decaying wood and the hollow trees are languishing.

Lives on trees

The nature reserve is home to a rich lichen flora. Some fifty species have been found so far and five of these are very rare in Sweden. Many of the lichens grow as a crust on the bark of broad-leaved trees and identifying them requires both a magnifying glass and expert knowledge. The flowering beard lichen, on the other hand, is a large shrub lichen that can drape the branches of old oaks.

Winged inhabitants

Malghult is home to a number of different birds that are typical of older deciduous forests. Perhaps you hear the drumming of woodpeckers as you walk through the forest? The shy stonechat makes itself known with a sharp snapping zigzag. The nuthatch is also shy, and the best chance to see it is in the fall. Then it flies in shuttle traffic between hazel bushes and its territory to collect nuts for the winter.

Forest butterflies

Butterflies are a group of insects that are perhaps best associated with open, flower-rich fields. But forests can also be important butterfly habitats. One of Malghult's rarities is the maple leaf edge moth, which in Sweden has only been observed in a few locations in Småland and on Öland. The species is linked to maples, as the larvae live in the maple leaves.
