Lämmedal, Naturreservat
- Nature reserve
- County: Kalmar län och Öland
Actions
Description
In Lämmedal you walk through spruce forest with a large element of aspen and deciduous trees. There are many old trees and a lot of dead wood. The species diversity of fungi, lichens and mosses is therefore great. In spring and early summer you can see several unusual plants that thrive in the nature reserve's fertile land.
Used in the past
The reserve is part of the village of Lämmedal's old outfields. Here the farmers let their cattle out for summer grazing. In the south there are lime, elm, maple and ash trees that bear traces of leaf harvesting (pollarding). The farmers harvested twigs and leaves from these trees to supplement the cattle's winter feed. The occasional stump shows that the farmers also collected firewood and timber from the forest.
Patchy forest
The reserve's forest is sparse and rich in glades. This is partly a legacy of the era when the forest was used for forest grazing. New gaps have also been created in recent years. Fallen trunks lie like a pick-axe as a result of the storms that hit the area in 2005 and 2007. Infestations of spruce bark beetle have also killed many trees. In the forest glades, light-loving deciduous trees have had a chance to sprout.
Rich soils
The area is rich in greenstone, a collective name for dark basic rocks. When greenstone weathers, it releases substances that make the soil fertile. This is why the flora is so rich in the forest. Musk marigold, spring pea, lesser celandine, wood anemone, water lily, lungwort and toothwort are some of the plants you can see.
