Actions

Description

The Köksmåla nature reserve contains valuable deciduous and coniferous forests. Particularly worthy of protection are the old oaks, which provide shelter for a number of unusual species. Untouched bogs and Lake Trästen contribute to the varied nature of Köksmåla.

Old oaks - trees of diversity

Many old, wide-crowned oaks grow in the reserve. The oldest oaks were already sprouting in the 18th century! The old, hollow and rotten trees are vital for many plants and animals. Endangered species such as the pale lichen and oak bark are examples of species that find refuge in the giant trees of Köksmåla. Even old spruces found in the reserve have many species attached to them.

Wet environments

The nature reserve's waters and wetlands are also valuable environments. Lake Trästen is home to unusual fish such as the coypu and stone loach. In the large wetlands Trästängen and Salkärret there are small islands, with trees that are several hundred years old. Look for the handsome plant missne growing in the birch swamp forest east of the path.

Flowers of the forest

Toothwort, spring pea, musk madder and lungwort - many are the herbs that thrive in the deciduous forests. Ivy, a woody climbing plant that is green all year round and blooms as late as September-October, winds its way up the tree trunks. The hardwood forest in the easternmost part of the reserve is the richest in flowers.
