Description

The reserve protects part of the Lyckebyån valley. Local farmers have been harvesting hay here for hundreds of years. Along the slopes of the valley are unusual landforms left behind by the last ice sheet.

Historic hayfields

In the past, local farmers harvested hay from the wet meadows along the Lyckebyån river. The meadows gave good harvests because the river regularly flooded and drowned the vegetation with nutrient-rich water. Mowing over hundreds of years has characterized the vegetation in the meadows. Even today, hay is still harvested from a small part of the reserve closest to the farm and along the stream. Where haymaking has ceased, however, willow bushes and birches have moved in.

Remains of the ice sheet

In the reserve there are several exciting and for this region unique traces from the Ice Age. Several long narrow ridges - ridges - wind along the valley. The ridges run in a northwest-southeast direction and are made up of blocks, stones and gravel left behind by the ice sheet. The traces of the ice sheet are valuable, not least for geologists and researchers. By studying the shapes of the landscape, they gain an insight into what happened when the last ice sheet melted away from our country.

Discover the traces of the past

The small gravel road through the reserve passes the Stampeleden trail. From there, you can make detours to the areas that were used in the past. There are some old barns where farmers stored their hay. You may also come across cairns - piles of stones that farmers have cleared from their fields.
