Description

Ängsmossen is one of the few large mires in eastern Småland. The bog contains open marshes, pine bogs and wooded bog islands. The vast wetland is home to many plants and animals - fragrant marsh marigolds, colorful butterflies and dancing cranes.

Bog, marsh and swamp forest

Ängsmossen is a mosaic of bogs, fens and swamp forests. The bogs get their water from precipitation, unlike the fens, which get water from the surrounding soil. Swamp forest grows on the bog islands. The largest bog islet, located in the south, is different from the others. There was a fire here in 1959 and the pines that grow here were planted after the fire.

Bird life of Ängsmossen

In late March and early April, cranes arrive at their nesting sites. At this time of year you can also hear the barn owl hooting in the evening and at night. If conditions are good, the sound can be heard from several kilometers away. On bright early summer nights, a different sound is heard over the marsh. It is the distinctive, creaking call of the nightjar.

Wetland flora

A wide range of moisture-loving plants grow in the soft moss mats. The meadow willow colors the bog white with its cotton-like axes. So does the water primrose, which also contributes an aromatic scent. Another white-flowering herb is the marsh lily, which has delicate flowers clustered together. On the other hand, the marsh willowherb and the orchid mosquito flower add color.
