Description
A Biosphere Reserve is designated by the UN agency UNESCO and is a geographical area characterized by high biological and cultural-historical landscape values, as well as people living and working there. It is therefore not an area that should be protected from human activity. Instead, the Biosphere Reserve has been tasked by UNESCO with exploring ideas on how we can both use and conserve nature's ecosystem services in a sustainable relationship between people and nature. There are currently over 700 biosphere reserves worldwide, and the Voxna Valley is one of seven in Sweden.
The Voxnadalen Biosphere Reserve largely covers the Voxnan catchment area and includes parts of Ovanåker municipality, Ljusdal municipality, Bollnäs municipality and Rättvik municipality. Edsbyn and Alfta are the biosphere reserve's two most populous towns.
Voxnadalen Biosphere Reserve has three focus areas:
The forest as a sustainable resource Living water An open and living landscape
