Description
In Oxhult you will find older beech and oak forests where the oldest trees began to grow in the second half of the 19th century. Today, the reserve forms an island of deciduous forest in an otherwise spruce-dominated landscape. There are many old trees and important red-listed species in the form of lichens and fungi. For those interested in nature, the reserve offers an interesting experience with varied nature.
Oxhult consists mainly of beech and oak forests that have been here for a long time. The oldest trees began to grow in the second half of the 19th century. According to old maps, there have been broadleaf forests in the area since the mid-17th century. The reserve can therefore be said to be a remnant of the larger and more coherent broadleaf forests that existed in Halland in older times.
Exciting lichens are found in the forests
In the early 2000s, an inventory was made in the reserve. At least ten red-listed species were found in an area in the north-eastern part, including small noble lichen, violet-grey lichen and the fungus breadfruit. This area has been classified as a key biotope, which means that it is a particularly important area to protect. The reserve is also valuable for birdlife. Buzzards have been seen nesting in the area.
Important that old trees are preserved
To the south of this area there is a natural forest area of at least six hectares, which also has high natural values. Old and coarse oaks, pines and beech trees are scattered throughout the area. The ground is littered with large fallen branches that have started to decay. It is important to protect the old trees and clear away spruce so that the broadleaf forest with its high biological values does not disappear.
Getting around in the reserve
There are no marked trails or paths in Oxhult, but the area closest to the parking lot is easy to get around. Here you can walk through the forest and enjoy the peace and quiet. Further away in the reserve there is a large ditch that is very difficult to cross.
Reserve neighbor
Just north of Oxhult is the reserve Smedjeån Skönhult. Here the natural values consist of the natural forest stream and its surrounding bogs, swamps and natural forest environments.
