Näktergalslunden, Naturreservat
- Nature reserve
Actions
Description
Näktergalslunden is located like an island in the middle of the agricultural landscape. The reserve is a very rich bird site with mainly small birds. Several ponds are located in the area, surrounded by a species-rich and sometimes dense layer of shrubs.
You enter the jungle-like environment of Näktergalslunden through thorny bushes. The dense tree crowns, mainly of silver birch, give the grove a dark interior. Red currants, barberry, elderberry, willow, bramble, hedge, hawthorn and blackthorn grow in a sometimes impenetrable layer of shrubs.
Rich bird life
In the dense vegetation it can be difficult to see any of the grove's inhabitants, but they are heard all the more. During the spring and early summer, there is the sound of birdsong from many different small birds such as blackcap, willow warbler, marsh warbler and swift. From mid-May you can hear the place's namesake, the nightingale. This mythical bird has a very inconspicuous plumage but its song, which is very loud and varied, distinguishes it from all other bird species in Sweden.
Historical traces
Within the area there are a large number of ponds of different sizes and depths. These so-called marrow pits were dug in the 19th century when the calcareous clay and soil were utilized. The rich marl clay was used to improve poor agricultural land and to make bricks.
Where to stay in the vicinity
Näktergalslunden is located midway between Steninge and Ugglarp. In these communities there are accommodation facilities, camping and hostels. There are also cafés and restaurants in these communities.
