Description

Welcome to Vitgrund-Norrskär Nature Reserve!

Vitgrund-Norrskär Nature Reserve is located in Gävle Bay off Harkskär, about 2 kilometers from the coast. The nature reserve consists of the two larger islands Vitgrund in the south and Norrskär in the north, as well as a number of skerries and small islands with surrounding water.

The two islands, Vitgrund and Norrskär, consist largely of vegetation-poor shingle, rock and boulder fields. The rocky shores are home to sea buckthorn, torch flowers and sea rye.

On Vitgrund you can also experience historical remains, such as house foundations and boat landings, as the largest fishing village in Gävle Bay was once located here.

There are natural harbors on both islands for those with their own boat. On Vitgrund there is a municipal guest jetty, wind shelter, barbecue area, picnic table and toilet. At Norrskär you can moor your boat against buoys or rocks. There is also a picnic area and toilet.

Facts

Animals in Vitgrund-Norrskär nature reserve

The area's islands and skerries are known for their rich bird life, including Gävle Bay's largest population of white birds, mainly herring gulls, common terns and sandwich terns.

There are also typical archipelago species such as blackbirds, rooks, red-legged kittiwakes, skuas and curlews, but also lapwings and sanderlings are found in the area. Sea eagles are also regularly seen.

To protect the bird life, access to the eastern part of Vitgrund is prohibited between April 1 and July 31.

Directions

Naturreservatet ligger cirka 15 kilometer nordost om Gävle, cirka 2 kilometer från kusten.
