Hamsas, Naturreservat
- Nature reserve
- County: Gävleborgs län
Actions
Description
Hamsa Nature Reserve consists mainly of 80-120 year old spruce forest with elements of pine-covered bog. The forest has some traces of older forestry. Historically, the forest in this area has probably been heavily used for firewood for the surrounding ironworks. The part that is now a reserve is a small remnant that has survived. The forest belonged to the old Hamsas guest farm, which gave its name to the nature reserve.
The area is located 5 kilometers south of Järbo in Sandviken municipality and covers 57 hectares.
Valuable for many
In the reserve you can therefore find both pines and spruces that are 160 to 200 years old. Some well-grown old pines boast armored bark and curved branches at the top.
There are also elements of deciduous trees, mainly aspen, but also willow, alder, rowan and wych birch. In the nature reserve there are some dead trees that serve as an important habitat for fungi and insects, as dead wood is becoming increasingly rare in today's forests.
