Description

Åby urskog is a 300-hectare nature reserve located in the northern part of Gävle municipality. The landscape is flat and characterized by nutrient-poor moraine soils with pine forests, marshes and a seemingly endless amount of boulders. Here you can experience an area of true wilderness. The wetland consists of soft mats of white moss and is easily accessible with a pair of boots on your feet.

The wetland, which is located in the center of the nature reserve, is uncultivated, which is very unusual. The surrounding forest has been left untouched and is rich in old trees. There are also many old aspens growing in the area, which is also unusual. There are also a few very old pine trees in the area, probably 300-500 years old.

Cultural-historical elements

Within the nature reserve there are traces of older forestry in the form of coal beds. The presence of the Axmar mill is the reason why coal beds are abundant in the forests in the area.

One of the decisive factors for the location of the mill was the rich supply of coal from the large forests in the area.

Animals in Åby primeval forest

The area is home to rare or endangered species of birds, beetles, mosses, lichens and fungi.

Three-toed woodpeckers**,** woodpeckers and green wrens have been observed in the area. There is a shimmering beetle, the bronze ladybird, which develops under the bark of recently dead spruces, mainly on late-growing trees.

The pine shoot beetle is a parasite on old living pines. Fruiting bodies first appear on pines that are 100-150 years old or older.

Leatherjackets are mainly found on the bark of old mossy deciduous trees (mainly maple, rowan, aspen and ash) in areas with high humidity.
