Old pines with species with strange names In the pine forests, there are quite a few low-growing broad-crowned pines around 300 years old. Pine ticks are common here and there is also a pine with an infestation of the red-listed beetle, the relict beetle. In the mixed forest, which occupies most of the area, the ground is mossy and covered in brushwood. The trees are taller and there is quite a lot of aspen in places. Several red-listed species, other species indicating high natural values, are found here. Among them are the coral sponge, border sponge, cream sponge, wood sponge, spruce sponge, lung lichen, coral lead lichen, knapweed and three-toed woodpecker. In the spruce forest sinks there is also woolly tick.

Perhaps there are goblins in the wetlands? There are several streams and wetlands in the area, some with more herb-rich vegetation. Wetlands are shallow depressions with poor water drainage. The wetlands are filled with water during winter and spring but dry out during the summer. Overall, Vargåsen has a high nature value linked to the size of the area and the natural forest-like conditions.

Not affected by modern forestry - but by fires! The forest has not been affected by modern forestry, which is evident from the different ages and sizes of the trees. In older times, it was probably more heavily used, as can be seen from the fact that there is a clear road up through the mixed forest south of the lake. Fire sounds in the pines indicate that a forest fire occurred here, probably around 1850 and 1880.

In the reserve it is not allowed to...

• damage growing or dead - standing or fallen - trees, stumps and bushes
• drive a motorized vehicle on the terrain. Applies to both bare ground and snow-covered ground. Exceptions apply to the snowmobile trails marked by the County Administrative Board, when the ground is snow-covered.
