Description

The Örsjöberget Nature Reserve is located northeast of and directly adjacent to Örsjöbergssätern on the northwest slope facing Flybäcken. The reserve, which covers 21 hectares, consists entirely of mixed coniferous forest. Here you can find spruce trees that are up to 200 years old.

Description of the reserve

The spruce forest in the west is diverse, with trees of various ages. There is a large number of large trees, many of which have reached an age of 170 years. The vegetation is influenced by springs, with plenty of blueberry bushes and an abundance of large herbs. Parts of the forest are marshy. The eastern part of the slope is drier, but the proportion of dead wood is even higher. Fallen trees, standing dead trees, and high stumps, along with some large spruce trees over 200 years old, are found in abundance.

The central part of the reserve consists of distinct natural pine forest, partly on poor rocky ground. The surrounding forest is largely intensively managed, consisting of clear-cut areas or young stands. The bedrock, like that of the foremountain terrain to the north, consists of nutrient-poor sandstone layers. However, the fertility, which is unusually high for the region, indicates some influence from diabase.

Historical and Current Land Use

The forest environment of Örsjöberget exhibits long-term continuity with minimal disturbance, in recent years primarily in the form of selective logging. Given the proximity to the mountain pasture, forest grazing has likely occurred historically.

Biological values

The forest in the area is rich in variation in both forest types and structures (dead wood, age variation, etc.). Dead wood in the form of large fallen logs and standing dead trees is present in significant quantities. The dominant high and consistent humidity creates favorable conditions for cryptogams, and the presence of old and large trees likewise supports more demanding epiphytic cryptogams. In the central, species-poorer pine forest environment, there are dead trees and signs of fire damage in living pines. A list of indicator species and red-listed species encountered, primarily in the spruce forest areas, is provided below.
