Description
Garpenberg Mill was long associated with Garpenberg Mine. In the middle of the 16th century, Gustav Vasa established a crown mill and a royal estate here and invested heavily in the business. The mill was then managed by the Funck, von Stockenström and Cornelius families, among others, until it was closed down in 1910 and the state reacquired the mill site. Between 1915 and 1995, the Swedish Forestry College conducted education and research here. Since 1997 the area has been privately owned.
Today, the most obvious trace of the mill is the stately manor house, also called Garpenberg Castle. There are also several other older buildings in the area, as well as a skittle alley and an arboretum (collection of unusual trees and shrubs). At the outlet of Gruvsjön, there is also a large area of slagstone cairns, and next to the Klondyke beach are the ruins of a washing plant, whose residual product is the golden sand that gives the beach its name. The embankment between the mill and Dala Finnhyttan station is ideal for hiking or mountain biking. Several other hiking trails also pass in or near the area, such as Pilgrimsleden, Reservatsleden and Dalkarlsvägen.
