Description
At Fenningberget, you’ll find a large, roadless wilderness area with high natural forest value, both on the mountain’s plateau and in the lush forests on its slopes.
Old spruce trees in untouched forest
A lush spruce forest grows here, and here and there are spruce trees over 300 years old. On the higher elevations, the forest is low-growing, often with spruce trees with broken tops and low-growing birches. On the mountain’s slopes, a dense spruce forest grows, with herb-rich ground vegetation in many places. Here you’ll find natural habitats and species whose existence depends on avoiding all forms of forestry activities. There are many different tree species of varying ages that have long been allowed to grow undisturbed by forestry. This, combined with the influence of water, has resulted in a great diversity of cryptogams (lichens, mosses, fungi, and ferns).
Among Eagles and Bears
Birdlife is not particularly remarkable on the high plateau, but here bird species with both northern and southern ranges coexist. In the lush spruce forests on the slopes, the three-toed woodpecker thrives, with several pairs present. The golden eagle is regularly spotted while foraging in the area. Among the larger fauna, the bear is worth mentioning, as its den has been found on the mountain. The plant life on the plateau’s forest-marsh mosaic is sparse, with tussocky marshes between spruce-covered elevations and pine-dominated transitions with heather mats.
Snowmobile trail to a cabin with sweeping views
A snowmobile trail runs across the mountain in a south-north direction. It leads via one of the two side trails to a hunting cabin by Lake Morsjön, offering fine views to the south over the surrounding landscape’s lower-lying forest-marsh mosaic. The other side trail leads to the small pond Trollbotjärnen, where fishing is available for stocked fish. There are no other recreational facilities available today.
