Description
Tattamåla Nature Reserve is located in the lake-rich landscape of the forest. When you visit the reserve, you will experience a variety of natural environments with beautiful pastures, deciduous forests and mixed forests with old pine and beech.
Along Tattån in the east, high, large-blocky slopes rise with primeval deciduous forest. The reserve contains a large number of cultural remains that bear witness to past land use.
Eel trapping method or settlers?
The name Tattamåla probably originates from an old method of catching eels. Eels were 'caught' by scaring them up in a trap. Remains of the trap still exist today.
Another possible explanation for the name is that earlier settlers in the area used the medieval name "Tatte". According to oral sources, it may have been traveling companies, so-called "tattare" who stayed in and hence the name. Tattare is an old name for the Traveling People, which is now the correct name.
Coal making and water saw
The nature reserve contains a number of cultural relics such as coal mines, tar pits, terraces, cairns, road systems and ruins. One of the ruins is from a water-powered sawmill.
The pine needle indicates old forest
The diverse landscape with managed pastures, wetlands and various natural forest environments creates conditions for a rich flora and fauna. There is plant and animal life here that quickly disappears when grazing ceases or in areas with rational forestry. In the reserve there is, among other things, the pine tick, which indicates the long presence of pine forest. A variety of insects associated with dead wood have also been noted in the reserve.
The pasture creates the conditions for a completely different flora and fauna where human activity has characterized the vegetation for centuries. As many of these areas become overgrown, the importance of protection and management increases to preserve the mosaic landscape typical of Blekinge.
In the reserve there is game such as moose, deer, fox, hare, badger and recently wild boar have also moved into the area.
