Description

The Ronneby mussel beds are a marine nature reserve. With its 14,175 hectares, it is by far the county's largest nature reserve, and consists almost entirely of open sea.

The Ronneby mussel beds are rich in mussels as well as crayfish and other red algae. Mussel-rich shallow areas in the outer archipelago are an important resting and foraging area for diving ducks such as eider ducks and long-tailed ducks, species whose populations have declined sharply in recent decades.

Nature's purification plant

Mussels filter planktonic algae from the water column, thereby mitigating some of the effects of eutrophication in the Baltic Sea. Blue mussel filtration is both a sustainable and effective purification function to take care of diffuse emissions. This ecosystem service, in the form of improved water quality and visibility, is valuable for a healthy marine environment.

Bird islands

The nature reserve includes some 10 islands, of which Gåsfeten and Asla are the largest, as well as a number of small islets. The islands are important nesting, resting and overnighting sites for several species of white birds, including Sandwich Tern. Asla is covered by bird protection with a ban on entry during the period April 1 - July 15.

The world's first AGA lighthouse

On the northern part of Gåsfeten there is a lighthouse of the Gustav Dalén type. The current lighthouse, which was built in 1904, was originally equipped with a wick lamp. On April 1, 1906, it was equipped, as the first lighthouse in the world, with an AGA light with a cut-off valve. Nowadays it is electrified.
