Description
Angölsmåla deciduous meadow and deciduous forest in the Mörrum River valley is a fantastic area for those who appreciate the pastures of older times with pollarded deciduous trees, flowers and a rich butterfly fauna. Here you can wander among cultural remains in the form of house foundations, cultivation cairns and stone walls, but also seek out beech and oak forests to see birds, mosses and lichens that thrive in more pristine areas.
Mörrumsån Angölsmåla nature reserve is located just west of Mörrumsån, one and a half kilometers north of Hemsjö. Angölsmåla is a representative example of the small-scale, hamlet-style farming landscape of older times in the forest areas of southern Sweden. There are some 15 ancient remains registered in the area and almost 400 clearance cairns. The Blekingeleden trail passes through the area.
Inägomark to Jönsagården
The open pastures and deciduous meadows were formerly the property of Jönsagården and in the early 1900s consisted mainly of hay meadows and fields. Today, only the foundations of the farm remain, as well as stone walls, cairns, a tarred valley and a well-preserved lane. Of just over 130 pollarded trees in 2006, only about 40 living trees remained when inventoried in the summer of 2020. The pollarded trees consist mainly of ash and testify to older times of deciduous meadow use.
Species-rich deciduous meadow with sheep grazing
The entire deciduous meadow is now managed by grazing mainly with sheep, but also horse. In places, there is a rich, grazed flora with species such as summer violet, cowslip, maidenhair fern, pillwort, meadowsweet and pig's root. The butterfly fauna is also species-rich, with meadow fritillary and lesser fritillary swarmers being noted. High natural values are linked to the pollarded trees, which show a very rich cryptogamic flora with species such as golden curl moss, flat feather moss, porellas, rag lichen and the red-listed species pink lichen, pale crater lichen, elm lichen and southern pale spike.
Coniferous deciduous forest
The grazed land is surrounded in the north by nutrient-poor broadleaf forest with mostly beech and oak and a stone-walled, partially overgrown older field. East of the open pasture grows planted spruce, with elements of younger deciduous trees such as oak, lime and ash. On the eastern slope towards the power line road and Mörrumsån, the ground is partly silted up. The forest there is dominated by oak and beech. Some of the older trees have species such as felling moss, rust spot and rock fennel.
