Description

Hjärtsjömåla is one of Blekinge's largest natural coniferous forests. With a little luck, you may catch a glimpse of forest birds such as capercaillie and wolverine.

Natural forest with forest birds

Hjärtsjömåla contains an unusually large pine-dominated natural coniferous forest for the county.

In the southern part of the area there are elements of beech and in parts of the pine forest there are scattered scrub oaks on which many lichens grow. The terrain is partly rough and rocky. The area also contains a mosaic of small marshes and pine bogs. Charcoal remains in the soil indicate that the present natural forest may have been created after a fire.

Several red-listed species have been found, but the amount of old trees and dead wood means that the area probably contains more species than is known. Hjärtsjömåla is also home to an unusually strong population of capercaillie for Blekinge, as well as wolverine, pearl owl, sparrow owl and common crow. In one of the marshes grows abundant cold grass, a species that is quite rare in Blekinge. Next to the road in the southeastern part of the area are the foundations of an old farm.

The area also includes the whole of Östra Hjärtsjön and half of Västra Hjärtsjön. The lakes are nutrient-poor and have clear water.
