Description

In Grimsmåla you can experience part of the small-scale landscape of the Mieån valley, with formations from the Ice Age. The nature is varied, with pastures, pollarded trees, broadleaf forests, deciduous swamp forests and river environments.

The Grimsmåla nature reserve was originally established to protect some remaining gravel formations in the Mieån valley from mining activities.

Pearl mussels and bats

The Mieån river runs like an artery through the nature reserve. The river is rich in wildlife, including river pearl mussels. The river is bordered by grazed wet meadows and deciduous swamp forests, where marsh lily grows in places. On higher ground, drier grasslands, wooded pastures and forests dominated by broadleaf and pine take over. Pollarded trees, which were once cut down to provide fodder for livestock, are scattered throughout the area. Pollarded trees can become very old and many different species of lichens and mosses worthy of protection often grow on their trunks.

The semi-open landscape along the Mieån river is good hunting ground for bats. Around Grimsmåla there are several different species of bats, including the rare barbastelle. In the forests you can meet the lesser spotted woodpecker and the nuthatch.

Terraces, ridges and dead ice pits from the Ice Age

In the Mieån valley, ice rivers flowed during the Ice Age and left behind interesting formations such as terraces and ridges. Lake Vångagylet in the western part of the nature reserve lies in a dead ice pit. Dead ice pits are formed when large blocks of ice break off from ice sheets and lie on the ground. Meltwater carries sediment, such as gravel and sand, which eventually buries the ice block. When it melts, a pit forms in the ground.
