Description

Gise Höna is a small beech-dominated natural forest that has been allowed to develop freely since 1922.

Natural beech forest

Gise Höna was excluded from forestry as early as 1922, by the owner Johannishus estate. In 1961, the area was protected as a natural monument, then called Johannishus Beech Forest Reserve, and the forest has always been allowed to develop freely. At that time, there were virtually no spruce trees in the area. The ground was covered with beech leaves and the ground vegetation was poor. Over the years, the forest has developed into an uneven-aged beech stand with significant elements of spruce in places. There are also a few oaks and some large pines in the area.

Dead wood and species worthy of protection

Many flames and stumps, in various stages of decomposition and with wood fungi, make the area valuable for wood insects. Several species worthy of protection can be found in the reserve, including the beech wart lichen. The fertile moss indicates that it is an area worthy of protection. In recent years, wood pigeons have nested in the reserve's hollow trees. The beech trees in the area are an important source of dispersal for organisms that belong in a beech forest.
