Description
Avaskär chapel was inaugurated in 1934. It was built in the same spot as the church of St Peter in the now vanished town of Avaskär. The former church was built in the thirteenth century or earlier and was probably demolished when Kristianopel was founded. Today the churchyard is the only remnant of the old city of Avaskär.
Little is known of the early history of Avaskär as the Danish king Valdemar Atterdag apparently destroyed all the documents from that period. Located only 6 km from the Swedish border, the town suffered numerous raids in the recurring wars between Sweden and Denmark in the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries.
