Day trip: Boat, bike and coastal life – from Trossö to Ytterön via Färskesjön

Experience the Blekinge coast by boat, bike, and on foot – a journey filled with natural beauty and charming coastal villages.Enjoy it as a day trip, or extend the adventure with overnight stays along the way to discover even more. The route is mainly designed for summer, but it’s also possible in winter when archipelago ferry departures are limited, provided you’re willing to cycle a bit longer and plan for overnight stays.

Your journey starts and ends in Trossö, but the pace is up to you. Make it a full-day excursion, or take your time with a detour to Kristianopel for a night at the historic guesthouse or a countryside stay at Lantluft. For an extra special ending, round off the trip with a relaxing evening and overnight stay at Allans on Ytterön, where the stillness of the archipelago makes it easy to linger before the boat takes you back to Trossö. On the map in this article, you’ll find more suggested stops along the way.

Start from Trossö
From Handelshamnen, hop on the archipelago ferry to Trummanäs and start cycling towards Torhamn along the Torhamn trail.
When you reach the turnoff for Färskesjön, follow the road to the parking area.

Färskesjön is a peaceful lake surrounded by pine and deciduous forest. Here you can pause, leave your bike, and stroll along the shoreline. The lake is framed by both woodland and open clearings where the water sparkles through. Take a break to enjoy the quiet—or go for a refreshing swim before continuing your ride.

From Färskesjön you have two options:

Option 1 – Detour via Kristianopel

Follow the coastal cycle route (Torhamn–Kristianopel) and make small stops along the way. You’ll find cozy farm shops, vintage markets, and cafés perfect for a break. Once in Kristianopel, you’ll discover a town with a fascinating history as a border fortress between Sweden and Denmark. Walk along the preserved city walls, visit the charming 17th-century church, or wander through small shops and gardens. Enjoy lunch or dinner at Sött & Salt, have coffee by the harbor, and round off the day with an overnight stay—either at Kristianopel Gästgifveri or at Lantluft along the coastal road.

Option 2 – Direct to Torhamn

Continue along the cycle route (Torhamn–Kristianopel) by the coast to Torhamn. Here you’ll find Café Måsen for a tasty lunch and a quaint little harbor. From Torhamn you can also head out to Torhamns Udde – one of Sweden’s top birdwatching sites, famous for its open landscapes and rich birdlife.

After Torhamn, cycle towards Hästholmen and take the cable ferry to Ytterön (the ferry is free and runs about every 20 minutes – ytterofarjan.se)

On Ytterön you can enjoy a meal or a drink at Allans, or treat yourself to an overnight stay. Take time to explore the island too—wander along gravel roads lined with old farmhouses, visit the small harbors, or swim at the island’s bathing spots. With its tranquil pace and rural charm, Ytterön is the kind of place you’ll want to stay longer.

The journey ends with the archipelago ferry back to Trossö from Ytterön. Check current timetables at skargardstrafiken.se.

Be sure to check both ferry schedules and the opening hours of cafés and restaurants before your trip, as these vary between high and low season.

Tips for the low season

During the off-season, archipelago ferries may run less frequently—or not at all. In that case, you can cycle the full distance to or from Trossö along the coastal trail. It requires a bit more planning and possibly an overnight stay along the way, but it can also be a chance to discover even more.
