Description

Royal adventures on the popular mountains Halleberg and Hunneberg

Ecopark Halle- and Hunneberg

At the southern tip of Lake Vänern, just east of Vänersborg, you will find the plateau mountains Halleberg and Hunneberg. Along the steep mountain slopes grow gnarled oak trees, and in the deep ravines fragrant carpets of wild garlic bloom. On top of the mountains you will also find around ten lakes.

The mountains have been inhabited for thousands of years, and many traces of the lives of the ancient people of Västergötland can still be found here. The mountains form Western Sweden’s only ecopark, covering more than 6,700 hectares, which means the forests here contain unique and biologically valuable environments. Parts of the area are also protected as nature reserves. Learn more and see a map here.

Bergagården – the starting point

The HalleHunneberg Visitor Center is located at Bergagården on Hunneberg, which is an excellent starting point for many activities, information, and sights. In the visitor center you will find tourist information, a museum, a shop, and a café.

Here you will also find the Troll Forest, a large forest playground for children designed to encourage movement and play. You can also play troll bingo and cone golf.

From here, hiking and mountain bike trails begin. At the HalleHunneberg Visitor Center you can rent canoes, buy fishing permits or souvenirs, book guided tours or beaver safaris, or ask the staff about scenic viewpoints. On the grounds there is also a pleasant restaurant focusing on game meat. If you prefer to bring your own food, there are several barbecue areas on the mountains.

To find Bergagården, follow the signs marked “museum” when driving toward Vargön.

Halleberg

Halleberg is the twin mountain that overlooks Lake Vänern. Some say that Halle was the location of Valhalla, and here you can find Scandinavia’s largest ancient hillfort. The film “Halvdan Viking”, which premiered in cinemas in 2018, was also filmed here.

Lake Hallsjön is the mountain’s only lake and is known for its calm atmosphere—well worth a visit for a relaxing walk.
